Mornin’ Children!

Of late, I’ve been having difficulty sleeping through the nights, so what do I do?? Fight it and try forcing myself back to sleep in anticipation of the next workday? I think not. I go to my livingroom sofa, get into a comfy position with my favorite blankie and turn on the TV to AMC on Demand! Isn’t Cable awesome!?

From there, I can access the earlier/earliest Mad Men episodes, and watch all ”re-runs” of my favorite 60’s crew with relish! This early morning’s episode (2am to be exact): “The Hobo Code” episode #108. This is the episode where our protagonist, Don Draper, nee Dick Whitman, finds himself constantly haunted and tormented by pieces of his secretive and depressing childhood.

Remember the young woman artist who lived in Greenwich Village with whom he was having an affair? She was quite, for that era, independent, but fond of our boy Don nonetheless. As the story goes, Don had just recently received a $2500.00 bonus [considrable by today's standards, but a King's ransom back in the 1960's!] from The Cooper of Sterling & Cooper, for his unique and one-of-a-kind Don-like performance at the agency.

He then promtly goes to his lover’s apartment where he is unceremoniously undermined and barraged for his status, by her jobless hippie-friends; Don, not to be diminished by their jealousies, manages to handle himself quite well without being unduly defensive – he then wags the fruits of his labors, the $2500 check, beneath her nose, tells her to “… pack a bag – we’re going to Paris!” Given her independent spirit.. she declines his offer!! At the time, I know I certainlywas left wondering why she’d decided to turn him down. Now all this time, mind you, we still have no idea what his real life is about.

As it turns out, Our Don decides to hang out with his girl and her rude scrubs, and partakes in some marijuana. After having indulged and crashed a bit, he goes into the bathroom, examines his imagine in the mirror to the point of re-living that dreaded flashback portion of his life during the Depression with his step-mother and father on a rundown farm. He has already been branded as a “whorechild”, a product of his father’s indiscretion and endures this moniker/scurge throught his life. As the flashback unwinds, we begins to seen shadowy snatches of what makes Don, well…Don. We only know that sympathy plays a large part in how we feel about this particular episode. Afterall, it’s regarding an innocent child.

Once Our Don recovers from his weed-induced flashback, he finally leaves his lover’s apartment, amidst a domestic quarrel from her neighbors across the hall where the police arrive. One of his lover’s condescending friends tells Don “You can’t go out there”, because of the police presence, Don blithely and confidently retorts, as he points his hat at him…. “YOU can’t.”, as he very smoothly opens the door, places his hat on his head and walks past the police as though this were an everyday occurrence for him! The thing that really did it for me was when Don signed over that $2500 check to his lover, and placed it in her bosom after having been informed by a photo he took while he was still experiencing his weed-high, that she was actually in love with one of the men at her apartment; Don’s very discerning eye observed the reality for what it was — his time to make his exit. DAMN! $2500 bucks just for her being his distraction! I should have been such a man’s distraction in my entire life of relationships! Of course you know, that endeared me to him even more!

I actually said to the TV, as Don walked out of her apartment….. “MY MAN DON — Go ‘head on, with ya bad ass!!” I tell you folks, there’s NOTHING, at least for a woman like myself, like a confident man. Then…. the Matt Weiner twist comes:

I see this same man, who, just a minute ago left the shadows of a Greenwich Village apartment, drugs and police… emerge into a totally different, suburban scene; complete with a home large enough to contain his lover’s entire apartment; a little son, and daughter and what!! A Beautiful Grace Kelly-esque wife!! “What’s going on here?” .. was my response when I first viewed this episode. What a character! I was totally hooked from the word jump. So, now you all know what a Mad Man Fan does when she cannot sleep. Of course, I was finally lulled into a light doze, then making my way back to my bedroom. Don…. what an effective sleep-aid!

SAL!

Well…. no one’s talkin’ about Sal Romano! So, I’m gonna.

The first time I remember feeling a stab of incredible pity and empathy for him was when one of his co-workers [the blond guy] said in effect he didn’t want to work around “them”. Sal was holding a donut and just like a little kid who’d been ridiculed, the look on his face was absolutely crushing & heart-rending!!

Not to mention, shortly thereafter, Sal developed a sort of a crush on him: Remember the cigarette lighter scene? Then…. when he and Don went on a business trip out of town, and the bell hop just ravaged poor Sal — I REALLY thought Sal was going to get a chance to let himself be himself; then.. the fire, and down the fire escape came DON!! OMG! HE saw them!!!

Did ANYone have any feelings about those two episodes??

Is Sal Leaving Mad Men? The actor behind the man talks to us, and also shows us his super cool store!

The future is unclear for his character on the hit AMC show “Mad Men,” but actor Bryan Batt is taking advantage of the down time here in his hometown since the recent season finale.

Batt — who plays closeted gay art director Sal Romano — is preparing for the holiday shopping season at the home decor and gift shop he runs in New Orleans with his life and business partner, Tom Cianfichi.

They opened their store, Hazelnut, on trendy Magazine Street in 2003. Offering home decorations such as pottery, stemware, fabrics and frames, the store sits in a neighborhood where homes are scattered among antique shops, clothing boutiques, restaurants and bars.

“It’s something we always wanted to do,” said Batt, as he opened a box of glittery red holiday candles that had just arrived at the store. “I’ve always loved gifts and shopping and design.”

Batt, 46, loves blending and mixing patterns, eras and colors rather than having everything match. His design mottos include, “Don’t be afraid of color. What did it ever do to you?” and “If it looks right, it is right.”

His personal style is a blend of old and new, he said.

“I love antiques, but I love contemporary and modern things,” he said. “I do believe although we can honor the past, we have to live in the present.”

One of the popular items at his store is a New Orleans-themed toile that Batt designed himself with streetcar, riverboat and French Quarter images. Hazelnut sells the toile by the yard or as shower curtains, towels, throw pillows, napkins and coasters. The design also can be put on serving trays, tissue boxes and wastebaskets, he said.

His store also carries oyster-shaped serving bowls, pewter alligator letter openers, streetcar and shotgun house ceramics, crab-shaped place card holders and serving trays with painted-on tree frogs.

“I like coming up with unique things that nobody else will have,” Batt said. “All the big stores, everything is homogenized. Everything’s by committee.

“What I like about this shop is that it’s what we like,” Batt said. “We have things from all over the world and in all different price ranges. I really love when you go in a store and it’s not all one thing.”

Batt divides his work time between New Orleans, Los Angeles and New York. But every break he gets, he heads home to New Orleans to be with family and longtime friends. He and Cianfichi share a home in the city, and Batt said he plans to spend most of the holiday season there.

Hazelnut shoppers shouldn’t be surprised if they find him doing some gift-wrapping.

“It’s one of my talents,” he said with a chuckle.

One of the reasons he has loved working on “Mad Men,” Batt said, is the style of the show, which is set in 1960s New York.

“I’ve always loved mid-century modern,” he said. “That whole era of dress and furniture and design was very unique, and I have a lot of aspects of it in the store and in my own home.”

Being surrounded by 1960s style is a fun part of being on set, he said. “Every detail is painstakingly perfected on the set, from the costumes to every little ashtray and the cigarette butts in that ash tray.”

The show follows the ruthlessly competitive New York advertising business. This season, Batt’s character was fired when he rejected the advances of a powerful male client, and his character was left out of the season finale, which aired Nov. 8.

“I honestly don’t know what is going to happen,” Batt said. The show has been picked up for another year, “and I hope that I’ll be part of it,” he said.

Meanwhile, he has New Orleans.

“New Orleans will always be home,” he said. “It’s so unique. I think it’s not like any other city in the world. We have our own food, our own music, our own way of life.”

He appreciates that the city’s history has been so well-preserved.

“A lot of cities have lost their uniqueness,” he said. “That hasn’t happened here.”
