Well…. no one’s talkin’ about Sal Romano! So, I’m gonna.
The first time I remember feeling a stab of incredible pity and empathy for him was when one of his co-workers [the blond guy] said in effect he didn’t want to work around “them”. Sal was holding a donut and just like a little kid who’d been ridiculed, the look on his face was absolutely crushing & heart-rending!!
Not to mention, shortly thereafter, Sal developed a sort of a crush on him: Remember the cigarette lighter scene? Then…. when he and Don went on a business trip out of town, and the bell hop just ravaged poor Sal — I REALLY thought Sal was going to get a chance to let himself be himself; then.. the fire, and down the fire escape came DON!! OMG! HE saw them!!!
Did ANYone have any feelings about those two episodes??

ANd to…. I’m quite a bit prejudiced toward Batt because we two share the same hometown!

I guess its a reflection of society’s changing views on homosexuality: the 60’s probably wasn’t a fun time to be one! I’m straight myself, but thought Sal was a GREAT character – I wish they find a way to bring him back, especially in the “new dawn” of the new independent company.
I think it would “round out” Don Draper’s character to show tolerance and compassion towards Sal – even tho our household is Draper-mad, his character can appear emotionally shallow in his dealings with others…
It would make us think less of his haunted past and love him more, but overall plot-wise would probably go against the flow of the times. Who knows, maybe Don’s intolerance of Sal is a “set up” for some great slow-pot-boiler action in the 4th series?
in which episode does sal sing bye bye birdie?
